Pure Products Review Part 2

Pure Products Review Part 2

pure logo

What is Pure? It is a brand of wellness products. There are so many brands of wellness products that it’s hard to choose which one is best. This article is a Pure products review.

That being said, I have continued to use Pure for almost a year. At first, I used the products to be more healthy and because my husband bought the largest starter bundle that they sell so that he could be bonus qualified more quickly in case he ever wanted to do anything with the business side of it.

Well-being and/or weight loss

After about three months of using the products, I understood the products more and saw the potential in using them for weight loss. I got serious about losing weight and have lost around 24 pounds.

I was able to lose weight because I believe that the products I consume have helped my own body utilize sugar more properly. Because I drink a smoothie for lunch as a meal replacement, I have cut my sugar intake drastically without even thinking about it. I have never been one to “diet” prior to this. I feel so much better on a daily basis, and I thought I felt fine prior to starting Pure.

Costs

Additionally, I have changed my view of budgeting for wellness products. If you think about it, it is smart to spend money to keep yourself healthy. I no longer feel guilty for spending money on consumable products that will help my family and me stay healthy. I think of it as grocery money and preventive prescriptions money. It is better for me to spend my money this way, and after a year of use, as I said, I feel better, and thought I felt fine.

Reviews

This is a Pure products review, and over the next several months, I will review all of the products that we use. In a previous article, I reviewed three more Pure products.

I wrote another article called how we became associated with Pure which talks about how I’ve never been one to sell these kinds of products since as a realtor, I already have to be sales-oriented enough as it is. I really only talk about Pure when people ask me how I have lost 20-24 pounds and how I “look so healthy”.

In the future, I will be writing about how the “fish chef friend” in my appendicitis article has reduced the number of Diabetes medicines by half since being diagnosed three years ago. He eats well, exercises, and consumes Pure products.

Green Coffee Bean~~product review

Green Coffee Bean is a a capsule containing green coffee beans which is the original form of a coffee bean. Coffee beans turn dark and lose their bitterness when roasted. When roasted, however, they also lose their chlorogenic acid. My understanding is that chlorogenic acid reduces the absorption of carbs from the digestive tract. Another way to say it is it reduces glucose absorption and lowers insulin levels to improve metabolic function.

picture of Pure Green Coffee Bean bottle

When I first began taking Green Coffee Bean, our sponsor said to take it before eating something “gross”.  Ha. I take two before dinner each night. There is a 30-day supply in each bottle, and it contains 50% chlorogenic acid.

Cleanse~~product review

The next product I will review is Cleanse. I use this product once a month for five to seven days. I have used both the liquid and capsule form. The company says the liquid form is more effective, but it tastes bad. It tastes like cloves. I put a dropper full in two to four ounces of water at night.

It’s very inexpensive. If you only use it one week a month, one bottle is a three-month supply. I cleanse during the week of my cycle, and other people I know cleanse the first week of every month. Pure’s motto is cleanse, balance, build. Basically, this motto means that Pure products help rid your body of toxins through seven channels, keep the body alkaline instead of acidic, and put the right minerals in it. Your body can then heal itself or prevent illness. The product Cleanse helps with the first step of this motto.

Daily Build~~ product review

So, this is a product that I changed my mind about. As I’m always trying to cut what I should be taking to try to save money, this is one that my husband kept telling me was a very good product. I wanted to consume cheaper vitamins. I grew up on Flintstones vitamins and never cared or saw any importance in taking good vitamins. However, after researching all of the ingredients in the Daily Build vitamins, I can’t pronounce much of them but am impressed.

For me, this is a two-month supply because I only take two a day since I drink their Energy drink in the morning, which starts off my day alkaline and is loaded with vitamins and contains zero sugar as opposed to drinking coffee, which starts your day off acidic.

If you are a coffee drinker, you could drink Energy in the afternoon for a pick-me-up.

Only taking half of the recommended dosage makes Daily Build very affordable for me. Also, my meal replacement smoothie for lunch each day is loaded with vitamins.

picture of Pure Daily Build

My husband takes the liquid form, which Pure highly recommends. This product helps with the third step in Pure’s motto of cleanse, balance, build.

Pure products review summary

There is a business side of Pure as well. It is an MLM company which means multi-level-marketing. I do not like nor participate in the pushy side of these types of businesses. I do believe in these products, though, and had to start doing something different when I realized that as I was getting closer to 50 years old, my metabolism wasn’t what it used to be.

Also, another pull for me to use the products is that the foods we consume aren’t as nutritious as they used to be due to the chemicals in the soils.

So, my husband participates in the business side of it, and if we make money while I’m getting healthier, that’s fine with me.

Pure Products Review Part 1

Pure Products Review Part 1

What is Pure? It is a brand of wellness products. There are so many brands of wellness products that it’s hard to choose which one to go with. That being said, this is the brand that I have continued to use for almost a year. I will review three products in this article Pure Products Review Part 1. Over the next several months, I will review all of the product that we use.

Additionally, I have changed my view of budgeting for wellness products. If you think about it, it’s smart to spend money to keep yourself healthy. I no longer feel guilty for spending money on consumable products that will help my family and me stay healthy. Because I think of it as grocery money and preventative prescriptions money, I would rather spend my money this way.

As I have zero medical background, I have no way of knowing if what they say is in the products is in the products. I can only go on what results I have had from personal experience and the research I have done. Also, I have also heard numerous testimonies from people who have consumed the Pure products.

General information

I wrote another article about how we became associated with Pure because I’m not typically one to begin using these kinds of brands, mainly because of the pushy people who sell them. But I’m glad I did.

In the future, I will also be writing about how one friend of ours uses many of the products, and he truly believes it has helped him keep his Diabetes under control. He eats right, exercises, and consumes Pure products. He is our “fish chef friend” in my article about my appendicitis experience.

I have used many of the products, as my husband bought a large bundle of products when he first began selling them. And, yes, at first, I was irritated that he bought such a large bundle.

However, thankfully, I was able to sample many of them and became hooked. Truly, I have loved every product I have used and have seen great results. Since I use many of the products, I will review three products an article over the next few months, in addition to this article Pure Products Review Part 1.

It is worth noting that all Pure products are organic and that people use Pure products for different reasons.

Energy~~product review

Energy is a caffeinated drink. I drink it in the mornings instead of coffee. It is a healthier way to start your day because it is alkaline, instead of acidic like coffee. However, if coffee is a must, coffee drinkers can drink Energy in the afternoon for a pick-me-up.

Energy is a powder that comes in a tub with one flavor or a bag with lots of little packs of different flavors. The tub is cheaper. It contains 120 mg of caffeine from natural sources. There are no artificial colors or sweeteners. There are 15 calories per serving. 30-day supply. pure products review part 1

There are many flavors, and they are all good. I recommend measuring 8 ounces of water and drinking it on ice. On the Pure website, it says that Energy is high in the B-vitamins which are useful for converting food into fuel. It also says that Energy is a blend of antioxidants and botanicals.

No sugar!

I used to drink Red Bull, then Spark. I like Energy because it contains no sugar.

360 Shake~~product review

The next product I really like is the 360 shake mix. It’s a powder that is full of vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fat, and fiber. Also, according to their website, it also contains a potato extract and fiber blend that “helps the body control feelings of hunger.” The potato extract releases “Cholecystokinin which is a natural peptide in the stomach that induces feelings of fullness.” There is also a Protease Inhibitor 2 that helps reduce appetite.

pure products review part 1

Ironically, the day I wrote the first draft of this article, I ate a small lunch instead of my shake since it was a Saturday. With this topic on my brain that day, I noticed that I was hungry quicker than I am when I have the shake for lunch. Some of the ingredients in the shake curb your appetite as advertised. After a shake, yes, I usually am super hungry by 4 or 5 pm, but totally fine during the afternoon. I consume a shake for lunch on most weekdays.

pure products review part 1

The 360 shake product also contains some probiotics and enzymes to aid in digestion. The protein is from whey and peas. The flavors are vanilla and chocolate.

My shake recipe is 1 scoop of 360 shake powder, 1 cup of frozen fruit, 1 scoop of Pure Greens, 2 T of Mila, 1 cup of water, and a couple of ice cubes. I put all of that in the Nutribullet Magic Bullet and blend it together.

Metabolic ONE~~product review

The last product I will review is Metabolic One. As I get closer to age 50 and further away from age 40, I have noticed that my metabolism isn’t what it used to be. Growing up, I never dieted. (I can picture the exact college friends who may read this and are thinking that is the understatement of the year. Lol.) Also, I always played sports, but didn’t “exercise” outside of that. Like, I think I went walking four or five times in college. (Again, they are laughing at this if they read it, as even those low numbers may be exaggerated. Lol.)

I began regularly exercising after having my third child around 14 years ago, but I continued to eat whatever I wanted to. Luckily, I’ve never been a sweets eater (until I had an appendectomy and my taste buds briefly changed). I like salty food and ate what I wanted to eat. About two years ago, I noticed that my weight on the scales kept creeping up.

As I kept increasing and was about to hit another decade on the scales (that’s what I call the 10-pound increments, 120, 130, 140, etc) I slowly convinced myself that I could no longer eat whatever I wanted and expect to maintain my weight or by this point, lose any.

After I began using the Pure products, when I decided to do something about the weight creeping up, I began taking Metabolic One to help my metabolism. I also committed to reducing my caloric intake and exercising more. That’s also when I began to drink the shakes during the week for lunch.

According to Pure’s website, Metabolic One is a blend of amino acids, nutrients, herbs, and botanicals. It helps your body use insulin more effectively. The description boasts that it produces a calming effect, maintains healthy blood sugar levels, curbs appetite, fights fatigue in stressful situations, and contains a small amount of naturally occurring caffeine.

I take two before lunch every day.

Summary

My husband sells these products. He has always been into fitness and health. Like I said earlier, I first began using the products because he bought a large bundle of products when he began selling them, and I was irritated. The products were in my house, and we had paid for them, so I tried them.

However, I kept paying for and using the products because I love them.

The business side of Pure is also good because it is not as well-known as some of the bigger names, and people can get in early. This could cause you to potentially make more money when more people learn about Pure and sign up under you to sell the products as well.

As I’ve said in a previous post on how we became associated with Pure, I despise the pushy pyramid-ish side of most of these brands, including Pure, but honestly, I like these products so much that I don’t mind telling people about them and then people can make their own decisions.

This was Pure Products Review Part 1. I have also written an article called Pure Products Review Part 2. If you take Pure products and want to review them, let me know!

The Steele Bayou Gates

The Steele Bayou Gates

No more water

The South Delta in Mississippi was flooded for six months in 2019. Most of the water that came as an uninvited guest, who stayed too long, has finally drained off of the land via the Steele Bayou Gates. I posted a video of the water leaving the area through the gates further down in this article.

Unfortunately, the damage is done.

The people in this area are reminded of the Forgotten Backwater Flood of 2019 every time they look outside. They are reminded that they still need the pumps to be passed and built so that this will never happen again.

First, the water stain lines that remain are a daily reminder. These stain lines are everywhere. People can see them on trees, signs, houses, and sadly, the gravestones of family members. If I saw a water stain line on one of my relative’s gravestones, it would break my heart.

Another way they are reminded of the flooding disturbed me as I took a left on Hwy 16 in Rolling Fork recently. I drove from Rolling Fork to Satartia when driving back to Jackson from my hometown of Greenville.

This is a 52-mile stretch.

Barren, desert wasteland

Normally, there are beautiful fields of crops all along the highway this time of year~~cotton, corn, and soybeans.

Instead, if someone asked me what month it was solely based on what I was seeing, I would have said it was November or December. The reason I would have said that is that there are no crops in the fields from Rolling Fork to Satartia.

This is a 52-mile stretch.

But even with that being said, it really didn’t even look like November or December. And it was 100 degrees outside that day. I would have known something was “off” because when it’s 100 degrees outside, normally, crops are in the fields.

What it really looked like was a barren, desert wasteland like a place you would read about it the Bible. Like a place that was once vibrant and thriving and now, poof, nothing. To me, even the color of everything was “different”. Everything looked waterlogged and tired, which makes it ironic that a waterlogged area could look like a barren, desert wasteland.

steele bayou gates helped drain the water off of the fields

Yes, the area will hopefully eventually recover one day, but seeing it like this does something to you.

There are some positives. The roads in this area that had been previously closed, which I wrote about in my article 5 eye-opening issues from the forgotten backwater flood, are now open. Secondly, Junae’s Grocery in Holly Bluff is now open again. She closed down for a period of time during the flood.

Preparing for the future

But, the damage is done.

For example, my husband has to clear the debris and prepare the fields for next year’s crop. Doing this costs money. It costs money to run the equipment. They already spent money last year getting the ground ready. They spent the money to get the ground ready for their uninvited guest~~water.

This year, he will prepare the land with borrowed money which he normally pays back with income from sold crops. Unfortunately, there will simply be very few sold crops this year.

He was only able to plant 20% of the land that he leases. He doesn’t own any of his land, but leases from seven different landlords, and some of them are family members. Imagine if you were to make 20% of your salary this year through no fault of your own and have to depend on crop insurance and government relief to ‘help’. (#finishthepumps)

My husband has also informed me that next year is looking very rocky. There are many reasons for this, but for simplicity purposes, the ripple effect that I have talked about in a previous post called 5 Eye-Opening Issues From the Forgotten Backwater Flood sums it up.

If the farmers do recover from this, there are still more questions and unknowns. Will the soil be fertile after having water on it for six months? Do farmers need to spend more money than usual to properly prepare the soil? Will this flooding happen again while we wait to see if the government and the EPA pass the pumps and build them?

The Steele Bayou Gates

How did the water finally leave the area? Very slowly through the Steele Bayou Gates. This video shows the water leaving the area. The government will build the pumps at Steele Bayou if they are ever passed.

According to an article written by Alex Rozier for Mississippi Today, “Just north of Vicksburg, sits the Steele Bayou Control Structure, a set of gates that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closes when the Mississippi River rises above the water level inside the structure.”

The Corps of Engineers opened and closed the gates several times during this six-month event. The draining is a slow process, and it took several weeks for the water to leave the South Delta once the gates opened “permanently” in July. The water levels dropped at a rate of six inches per day.

I had never seen pictures or videos of the water leaving the Steele Bayou Gates before this year.

In addition to the levees and gates, the government and EPA must pass the pumps to help alleviate the flooding in the South Delta when the Mississippi River is high. To learn more about why the pumps were never put in as promised, you can read 92 years of the Yazoo Backwater Project in 1400 words.

The future

Some farmers may not be able to farm any longer due to this year’s losses.

There is a misconception that farmers “poor mouth” but get tons of money from crop insurance claims and government assistance. This is a misconception that I’m aware of because I live it.

Dr. Keith Coble, a professor at Mississippi State University, validated me when he said this about farmers and crop insurance in the Mississippi Today article, “Even with the insurance, in all likelihood you’re going to absorb a pretty significant loss. It (having crop insurance) will help but it won’t make them whole.”

infographic of steele bayou gates and other items
Courtesy of Delta Council/Delta Wildlife

As with anything, some farmers will be “fine” eventually. For many others, this may be their last year or second to last year to farm. This has been a year that will take a long time to recover from. The ripple effect reaches many. #finishthepumps

2 Girls’ Thoughts About Summer Camp

2 Girls’ Thoughts About Summer Camp

My daughters love to go to summer camp. Sadly, my older daughter has aged out, which means she is too old to go back after attending for seven years. Thankfully, my younger daughter can still attend, and she just finished her seventh year. She can still go two more summers.

Recently, I was able to get my two girls’ thoughts on summer camp.

Camp Skyline Ranch

Our camp of choice is Camp Skyline Ranch in Mentone, Alabama, which is a two-week camp. The weather is great on Lookout Mountain, and Mentone is a hub for camps. Also, this is where Alpine Camp for Boys is, Camp DeSoto (girls), Camp Laney (boys) and several others.

Once we got back from camp this year, I asked each of my girls what some of their main reasons for loving camp were. I asked them individually, and they couldn’t hear each other’s answers. Also, I asked them to think of it in terms of as if they were speaking to a group of moms with young girls who had expressed an interest in attending camp.

The results were interesting. Here are my girls’ thoughts on summer camp and their favorite things about attending camp.

1. Making friends from out-of-town

two girls thoughts on summer camp

Making friends from out-of-town is an obvious one. But, I found it interesting that they do find value in this. In fact, they both named this one first.

Another thing one of them also said it is fun to learn the trends of other towns. One of them told me that Jackson girls were the only people at camp that parted their hair in the middle. I thought that was funny.

Also, they said that only seeing these friends once a year makes them cherish the two weeks they have with them. This year for the first time, however, one of my older daughter’s camp friends came and stayed with us for a weekend. They do keep in touch with their camp friends throughout the year through social media and their phones.

2. No phones

I was shocked that not being able to have their phones for two weeks was both of their second reasons for liking camp. Of course, I would have thought this was a reason for them NOT to like camp. But I was wrong. One of them said by not having your phone, you can get away from social media pressures. The other one said not having your phone forces you to talk to people. (lol) Their answers sounded like just what I wanted to hear, but they were being truthful.

3. Fun activities

two girls thoughts on summer camp

Next, both of them talked about the activities as their third reason for loving camp. One said you don’t get to do these activities at home every day. The other one said just that they are fun. Some of the activities are tower (climb a tower), circus (they have a device that trapeze artists use), cooking, tennis, horseback, bible study, archery, cheer, dance, gymnastics, fitness, art, flags, theater, mountain biking, fun swim, hiking, canoe, riflery.

two girls thoughts on summer camp

Each night there is a camp-wide activity, and they are the same from year to year. Also, there are clubs that are arranged by color, and you are in the same club every year. They have competitions with the clubs. There is a talent show as well.

4. No judgment

two girls thoughts on summer camp

They both said that there is no judgment while you are at camp. One of them worded it like, “you don’t worry about what people think of you; you can be yourself.”

5. Great counselors

Another one of their favorite things was getting to know older girls. One of them said they always have really good counselors. The other one said she liked the older girls’ influence on the younger girls. I like that they value their relationships with the older girls, and I hope that they will be a mentor for the younger girls, now that they are older.

6. A break from your hometown

two girls thoughts on summer camp

Another reason one of them loves camp is because you get a break from being in your hometown and get to do something different.

7. A break from your parents

The last one was funny to me. One of them said you get a break from your parents telling you what to do. Bless it.

In summary

It was fun to get my two girls’ thoughts on summer camp. For me, some of our best memories are from camp drop-offs and pick-ups over the years. We have been doing this for nine consecutive years, including my son’s years. Since their camp is between five to six hours away, we spend the night prior to drop-off and pick-up.

Some years, we have camped in our Airstream prior to camp drop-off and rented a cabin the night before pick-up. Other years, we have spent the night in Birmingham.

picture of a cabin at despot state park
We have stayed at the cabins at DeSoto State Park in Mentone. The nights are often cool enough to build a fire.

I love picking them up from camp. Obviously, I love seeing them after their being gone for two weeks, but I can also tell they are different when I pick them up. Unfortunately, yes they quickly get back into their normal life of technology and life pressures.

I have to hope that over the course of their lives, the total of 12-18 weeks of their lives away from technology and their parents out in God’s creation will be worth the investment one day. Thankfully, no one can ever take the memories away from them.

My brief camp experience

I, on the other hand, am jealous that my only memory from my one week of summer camp was being scared of a carpenter ant. During my only camp experience, I had to camp out on the ground in a sleeping bag one night. I was petrified, and my brain went all kinds of places in fear. A carpenter ant crawled across my sleeping bag near my face, and I was done with camp forever.

I’m thankful that there are no carpenter ants at Camp Skyline.

There are other camps across the Southeast that many from our area attend. I wrote about those camps in an article called Summer Camps in the Southeast.  Soon, I will be writing about other campers’ specific experiences at their respective camps.

What aspects of camp did I leave out? Which ones have your kids attended? Please comment below.

Summer Camps in the Southeast

Summer Camps in the Southeast

lookout mountain
This is one of my favorite roads because I love the views that lead to Mentone, AL.

The summer is coming to a close, and my kids will soon be back sitting in desks instead of lying around the house. (Preventing them from lying around the house is one good reason to find one of the summer camps in the Southeast.)

So, the other day, I reflected their favorite part of summer.

My kids all have gone to summer camp for years. They are different from me in this aspect.

I hated camp.

One time only, I went to Camp Hopewell near Oxford, Mississippi for a week, the summer after second or third grade. I will never forget the night that my best friend and I each had to sleep in a sleeping bag on the ground. I was terrified. We didn’t sleep a wink.

The scariest part that actually happened was that a large carpenter ant crawled across the sleeping bag, near my face. The scariest part that did not actually happen is that my brain went into overdrive. It presented itself with every scary scenario that could happen.

Back to the carpenter ant, I think several of them crawled on our sleeping bags. However, the one that crawled very close to my face was the only one I needed to see to be “done.” My best friend and I were crying, and she apologized for having gotten me into this situation. She had invited me.

Camp Hopewell is a great camp, and my nephews and their friends still go there today. But, it wouldn’t have mattered where I attended. I hated camp.

Lots of kids from our area attend camp. There must not be carpenter ants at any of these camps.

Alabama

Unlike me, my daughters have gone to Camp Skyline Ranch, a two-week camp, for seven years, and my son went to Alpine Camp for Boys, a month-long camp, for three years. Both of these camps are located in Mentone, Alabama, about an hour from Chattanooga, Tennessee and an hour and a half north of Birmingham, Alabama.

picture of summer camps in the Southeast

Mentone is a great location for camps because it’s on Lookout Mountain, and the weather is great. Mountain air is the best. Every year when we return to our hometown of Jackson, Mississippi, I say that Jackson is like being in a sauna.

summer camps in the Southeast
The entrance to Alpine Camp for Boys

The Mentone area is the home of several other camps as well. Another camp for boys in that area is Camp Laney, which a two-week camp. The boys from Camp Laney come to Camp Skyline each year for a dance. There is also Camp DeSoto in Mentone, which is a four-week camp for girls.

summer camps in the Southeast

Arkansas

Another one of the summer camps in the Southeast that kids from our area attend is Camp Ozark near Hot Springs, Arkansas. You can go from one to four weeks, but most people whom we know go to the two-week sessions. It is co-ed.

North Carolina

Camp Greystone for girls is located in North Carolina. The younger girls can go to Camp Greystone for three weeks, and the main camp session is a month.

Mississippi

Strong River is a week-long co-ed camp in Mississippi for ages 7-13 that is well-attended from kids in our area, as well as Twin Lakes, in Mississippi, which is also about a week and is co-ed. Camp Hopewell, which I already mentioned, is located near Oxford, Mississippi, is co-ed, and about a week long. These are all great summer camps in the Southeast.

Should you send your kid to camp?

I recommend summer camps if your child seems interested. Once they go, however, unless they are like me, they will want to go back each year during the same session so that they can see all of their friends each year.

So, go ahead and think about setting aside money towards “that car payment” (ugh) each month because as I said, these camps are expensive.

Should you send your kid to summer camp?

Because they are expensive, I recently wrote an article after I asked my two girls what they liked most about going to camp each year. It’s always been important to me to make sure sending them to camp was worth the investment.

My older daughter aged-out last year which means she was too old to attend this year. I liked her perspective since she had not been in a year. She hopes to be a counselor at Camp Skyline next summer.

What camps do your kids attend? Which ones have I missed? Were you yourself a camper?

How I Became Associated with Pure

How I became associated with Pure

Bundle?

Several years ago, my now ex-husband announced that he had ordered a “bundle” of wellness products. They would be coming in the mail in the next few days. I rolled my eyes, of course, and was actually “mad.”

When the products came in, I realized that this “bundle” probably cost a pretty large amount of money.

I then realized that, unknowingly, I was the catalyst for the “bundle” purchase. Ugh.

Here’s how I was the catalyst.

What kind of caffeine?

I like coffee but go in spurts as to what kind of morning caffeinated drink I want. I fluctuate between wanting a cold or hot drink. Several years ago, I was in a Red Bull phase, and my dentist who is a friend of ours said that Spark by Advocare was more healthy than Red Bull and that I should try it. He explained that Spark was an energy drink that people drink who would rather have a cold caffeinated drink rather than coffee.

So I began ordering Spark by Advocare from him. He wasn’t a big sales rep for them or anything, but he ordered it for us each month. Their family drank it, too, instead of coffee.

You sell what?

One time when I texted my dentist friend about ordering us another can of Spark, he said, “I will give you some Spark I have at the house, but I want you to try the same type of product in a brand that my wife is now selling.” She was selling Genesis Pure. I had never heard of it.

My first thought was….Runnnnnn.

Although all of the brands like these are great, the sales pitches drive me crazy. That is the truth.

I had never signed up to sell any of that because I personally don’t want to be forced or bothered by people selling stuff or to be perceived as the forcer or botherer.

Apparently, after they told my husband all about Pure, he not only ordered me some Energy (Pure’s version of Spark), but also ordered the “bundle.”

how-we-became-associated-with-pure

So, now that we had the “bundle”, I was stuck. I had to try the products.

You did what?

I had to try the products considering they were covering my dining room table, and we had bought them. I also found out that my husband had signed up to sell them because you get a better discount on the products if you pay the $25 and sign up as an IBO. Insert orange-faced cursing emoji.

So, in the beginning, I did watch a few videos to educate myself on the products that I was about to put into my body and asked a few of my friends if they were interested.

Fast forward a year. I love the products.

I haven’t pushed Pure much because again, I don’t want to be “that person” that people run from. Not to mention, I had no idea if I was trying to sell anything worth a darn. Being a realtor, I already have to be sales-oriented enough as it is. Also, not many people where I live know about Pure. The other brands similar to it have been around our area for a while.

I just know that I began to really like the products. I was glad we became associated with Pure.

Then a really cool thing happened.

You use them too?

I was validated when I walked into our “fish chef friends” beach house earlier this year, and I saw tons of Pure products on the counter. I almost fell out. We immediately began to discuss the products.

A couple of years ago, he was diagnosed with Diabetes. You would never have known he would be a Diabetic. But he was diagnosed. I will be doing an article on how he has been able to get off of some or all of his medicine. He watches his diet, exercises, and takes Pure products.

He is one of those people that wouldn’t just take something to take it. And, he doesn’t sell it. He truly believes the products are helping him. We are fellow Pure nerds.

In fact, the night before my symptoms of Appendicitis began, we were on the beach discussing the weight we had lost since taking the products and in general how good we felt. We use many of the same products, but each of us (my husband, fish chef, and I) also use different ones suited to our individual needs. We all talked about being happy that we became associated with Pure.

Future reviews on the products

So, sporadically over the next couple of months, I will talk about the products that I like and how I use them. I will write about a few products per post. If you are interested, of course, you can ask me some questions about Pure or the products. You could also become a Pure IBO for $25 and buy a “bundle” of products to get started yourself. Or, you could become a Pure IBO for $25 and just buy the products you want and get 25% off for being an IBO.

Learn more

My husband deals with the selling side of the products. He recently returned from a Pure conference in Jacksonville where he learned even more about the products. He is a researcher and has always had an interest in health and fitness. You can also learn about Pure and the products on his Pure website.

I believe in these products, and the minute I don’t, I will take the articles off of my blog and quit using them. I am convinced the products contributed to my quick recovery after a ruptured appendix, and I’m glad we became associated with Pure.

Have you heard of Pure? What products do you like?

Enneagram 101

Enneagram 101?

picture-rabbit-hole-enneagram-101
There is an endless supply of information on the Enneagram

The Enneagram…Hmm…Where do I even begin? Can I possibly give an Enneagram 101 crash course on such a large topic?

As I was riding to an out-of-town funeral with friends several months ago, one of my friends in the car asked us if we had ever heard of the Enneagram. She had been to a marketing conference, and the speaker told them about it.

I texted her a couple of days later and thanked her for my newest addiction. Ugh.

The Enneagram has to do with personality types, but it’s different from the Meyers-Briggs four-letter personality types. (I like the Enneagram better.)

So back to our car ride…my friend read us a little bit about each number and told us there was a test we could take.

According to all of the experts, there are nine numbers which represent nine basic types or approaches to patterns of human character. Once you know your number, you will better understand why you think, feel, and act the way you do.

Knowing your number

Knowing your number helps you self observe and tell the truth about who you really are and come clean from your delusions and illusions, according to Enneagram Worldwide. It can also help you understand others better and get along with people who may not think or act like you do.

I can’t remember if I took the test that she suggested (I’ve taken several), but I did initially take the test that costs $12. It’s called The Enneagram Test. Here is a good free test if you don’t want to spend the money, and my results were very similar on both of the tests.

There is no way I can adequately write about the Enneagram in just one post or really give an Enneagram 101. But, here are a few observations I have after studying it for several months.

Testing vs researching to determine your number

Should you take the test or research to determine your number?

Do both!

First, you could take the test. Second, you could listen to podcasts and read about each number. Listening to podcasts really helped me nail down which number I was. If you are like me, as you listen to podcasts and read, when they get to your number, you will know.

It’s creepy…it’s like someone has been following you around since birth AND living in your subconscious. A couple of numbers very accurately described me, my characteristics, and even my motives for sometimes doing what I do.

Warning

Be careful when you take the test not to answer it the way you think you should or the way that makes you sound better. (Ha.) Be honest.

I have two fairly prominent numbers, but a little bit of several other numbers. Unfortunately, I do have the good, bad, and the ugly parts of my numbers in me.

We all do.

And, of course, not everything you read about your number will apply to you, obviously, but enough will!!

You will know.

The Enneagram Institute

The Enneagram Institute website is where I learned a lot. That is the real Enneagram 101.

The experts say you aren’t supposed to try to figure out what number other people are.

Well, I do this….a lot. It’s hard not to.

But, it makes sense because we don’t know the motives behind what people do. We may not see the real person. Only you can decide what number you are. And you may change your mind the more you learn.

The numbers

The 9 Numbers: Type 1–The Perfectionist/Reformer, Type 2–The Giver/Helper, Type 3–The Achiever/Performer, Type 4–The Individualist/Romantic, Type 5–The Investigator/Observer, Type 6–The Loyalist/Loyal Skeptic, Type 7–The Enthusiast/Epicure, Type 8–The Challenger/Protector, Type 9–The Peacemaker/Mediator

With each number, there is a basic fear and a basic desire.

The instincts

One of my favorite aspects of the Enneagram that some people don’t even know about is the instincts.

These are three survival strategies. For example, three different people could be a “1”, which is the perfectionist, but all be very different. The “1”, in general, likes everything to be in order and correct. But, this can manifest itself in different ways, depending on what the person’s strongest instinct is.

Most people have two strong instincts, with the third in the distance. This is not always the case, but common.

Instinct one–self-preservation

According to Enneagram Worldwide, the first instinct is self-preservation. These people have a strong need for material supplies and security including food, shelter, warmth, and family relations as their way of responding to perceived threats and needs.

One way to understand this is to look at what someone does when he/she enters a party. The self-pres person, no matter what his/her Enneagram number is, walks into a party and immediately scopes out where the food is, the bathroom, how hot or cold it is in the place, etc, whether consciously or subconsciously.

So, for example, a self-pres “1” would in general be more anxious than other “1”s. They channel their survival concerns into having “things” or their necessities in order as a way to be a good person and to do the right thing. For them, family, home, and food preparation takes precedence over other needs.

Instinct two–social

The second type is social. This doesn’t mean that they are necessarily “social people.” It means that they have a need for belonging and membership within the larger group or community. They create social structures within communities per Enneagram Worldwide’s research.

In the party analogy, the social instinct person, no matter what his/her number is, walks in and immediately begins to see who is talking to whom, which group he/she might belong to, or who is in charge of what group and where everyone fits in. They do this either consciously or subconsciously.

So, for example, the social “1” is not very adaptable. They like clear sets of rules. They tend to be irritated when people don’t “act right”, and they don’t do as well in new situations, especially when the group isn’t “just so.”

Instinct three–sexual or one-to-one

The third type is sexual or one-to-one. This doesn’t mean they are necessarily “sexual people.” It means that their main needs are intimate relationships, close friendships, and they find vitality within their bodies. Primary relationships and coupling are their focuses. Also, they like one-to-one conversations.

In the party analogy, the sexual or one-to-one person, no matter his/her Enneagram number, walks into the party and immediately begins to look for one or two people to click with and talk to, whether consciously or subconsciously.

The sexual or one-to-one “1” perfectionist struggles with more jealousy and zealousness than their fellow “1”s. They are very self-controlled and regimented and may experience jealousy towards those “who seem to have more room for self-expression,” according to Enneagram Worldwide.

I think the instincts are fascinating.

The centers

Then, there are the centers which I’m personally not as interested in. For an explanation of the centers, you can read about them on integrative9 enneagram solutions.

The wings

Next, there are wings, and I’m personally also not as drawn to that aspect of it. Here is an explanation of the wings.

The potential rabbit hole

picture-rabbit-hole-staircase-enneagram-101
There is an endless supply of information on the Enneagram

If you take the test, begin listening to podcasts, and do the research, you can certainly find yourself going down a rabbit hole. What I mean is there is tons of information out there. But that’s a good thing if you end up liking the Enneagram.

Podcasts

picture of podcast icon

Since listening to podcasts is a great way to learn about the Enneagram, here are some of my favorites.  Typology by Ian Morgan Cron, Understanding your Enneagram by Rob and Veronica Noble (best info on the instincts), and The Enneagram Journey by Suzanne Stabile, and Probably the Enneagram.

Videos

When I first got started, I listened to a pastor on youtube at Sandals Church. I listened to his videos about each number. Search for “sandals church enneagram” and they will pop up.

That was a quick Enneagram 101. What are your favorite enneagram sites or podcasts? I would love to hear about them.

92 Years of the Yazoo Backwater Project in 1400 words

The present

picture of a pause button

There are 550,000 acres that are flooded in the South Mississippi Delta. The need for the Yazoo Backwater Project originated almost a century ago.

Summer is normally the prime growing season for crops in this area. On a normal year, farmers start harvesting some crops as early as August. However, this year, the land has been underwater for almost six months.

My husband farms in this area and has for over 20 years.

picture-of-flooded-field-yazoo-backwater-project
Fields submerged in water. Our silos are in the background.

The water is finally falling at a rate of one half-foot per day according to Peter Nimrod, the chief engineer for the MS Levee Board.  It’s a slow process. But, farmers missed the opportunity to plant crops this year.

I love my country and respect anyone in public office, whether elected (Congress) or appointed (EPA). It would be a very hard job. My fear is, since the water is falling, that Congress and the EPA will sweep this under the rug and cross their fingers that it won’t happen again.

Hopefully, this will not be the case.

The distant past

picture of a rewind button

I am from the Mississippi Delta, a little further north of the flooded area, but now live in Jackson, Mississippi.

My paternal grandfather was a farmer in Leland, Mississippi. My maternal grandfather worked for Staplecotn, AG Paxton Cotton, and a cotton company called Dan River. Additionally, my maternal great-grandfather was a farm manager.

Growing up in Greenville, seeing fields of cotton, corn, and soybeans was as normal to me as looking in the mirror.

However, I can remember bringing friends home from college for the MS Delta Blues Festival in September each year, and their being amazed at the beauty of the Mississippi Delta and all of the fields that we passed as we rode to Greenville because they had never seen fields of cotton, corn, and soybeans in person.

What was just beauty to them was many people’s livelihood in this area, and people and animals used the crops all over the world.

And it is no different today. Agriculture still drives the economy in the MS Delta.

The present and past collide

Back to the issue in the South Delta, I understand that the current members of Congress, are for the most part, not the ones responsible for the pumps originally not being put in. But, we must depend on the current members of Congress to make right what was done before their time.

I also understand that the current members of the EPA, which are appointed officials, are not the same members who vetoed the final step in the Yazoo Backwater Project in 2007. I know that the current EPA is reviewing a 10-year study provided by the Vicksburg District of the Corps of Engineers.

This map is from eenews.net showing the Yazoo Backwater Area and the site of the proposed pumping plant. Fish and Wildlife Service

This study will show that their fear of damaged wetlands if the pumps are put in, isn’t warranted like they thought it would be back in 2007.

Basically, Congress and the EPA work together on environmental topics. According to the EPA’s website, “when Congress writes an environmental law, we implement it by writing regulations.”

I read through Section 404 of the Clean Water Act Yazoo Backwater Area Pumps Project. It would take me a year to read every word, but I scanned it and all of the links provided. It was very informative!

EPA’s involvement

picture-of-misplaced-deer-yazoo-backwater-project
Misplaced wildlife due to the Yazoo Backwater Flooding

The Environmental Protection Agency, or the EPA as it is known, was created in 1970 by President Nixon. This was in response to a concern about increased air and water pollution, according to their website.

In 2007, the EPA thought the wetlands in this area were sustained by backwater flooding.

This is not the case.

According to Nimrod, natural rainfall sustains the wetlands in most areas. Research can now better show the EPA after 10 years of study, that this is the case.

Hopefully, since members of the EPA have toured the area, met in Washington D.C., Atlanta, and Vicksburg about this issue, after reviewing the 10-year study, will amend their regulations.

I couldn’t even begin to name everyone from Mississippi who is helping get these pumps passed in Washington D.C., but I am appreciative of their efforts.

Rewind to the Great Flood of 1927

picture of rewind beginning button

According to an article on the MS Levee Board website, 41% of the United States drains down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. After the flood of 1927 when the levee broke just north of Greenville, Mississippi, in 1928, Congress passed the Flood Control Act which then created the Mississippi River & Tributaries Project (MR&T) “which called for levees and floodwalls, floodways, channel improvement and stabilization, and tributary basin improvements.”

Also, according to the MS Levee Board article, by 1936, Congress saw that some of these solutions “cut off drainage outlets for interior basins”, and the Flood Control Act of 1936 was passed “which extends federal responsibility to many river basins that feed into the MS River, including the Yazoo Basin.”

Fast forward to 1941; there is one problem

picture of a fast forward button

We are all human, and in creating one solution, as we have all done, they created another problem. That is common and understandable.

Also from the MS Levee Board article, per a request from Arkansas delegates, in 1941, the problem was, Congress removed the Eudora Floodway from the MR&T Project. Mississippi delegates tried to fight this because they knew that this would cause higher stages on the Mississippi River at the Yazoo River and “cause flooding in areas previously safe from flooding.” So, Congress passed the Flood Control Act of 1941, and created the Yazoo Backwater Project to protect the Delta area of Mississippi. This project included a combination of levees, drainage structures (gates), and pumps.

  • Levees were completed in 1978.
  • Drainage structures or gates were constructed. According to the Vicksburg District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Steele Bayou’s in 1969 and Little Sunflower’s in 1977.
  • A connecting channel was completed in 1978. This sent water from the Big and Little Sunflower Rivers, Deer Creek, and Steele Bayou to bring “water from 4093 sq. miles of the Delta to one point at the Steel Bayou Drainage Structure where one pumping plant can be constructed.”
  • The pumping plant was never constructed. Dirt work was completed in 1986 and a culvert put in around the site. But it has been continually vetoed ever since.

Three out of four areas “in the same boat” were given their promised pumps. Our area was not.

Hindsight 20/20; government would have netted 152 million by now

I listened very carefully to Peter Nimrod, chief engineer for the Mississippi Levee Board, when he spoke to a group of concerned citizens at the five-month mark of the flooding. According to Nimrod, the final step of the Yazoo Backwater Project–the pumping station would have paid for itself AND saved the federal government (the taxpayers) millions since 2008. Here’s how:

  • The cost in 2007 (when it was vetoed) was going to be 220 million. That was for a pumping station smaller than what the other three areas received.
  • From 2008-2018, the pumps would have paid for themselves in what has been paid out in flood relief, plus the government would have netted 150 million. And by “government” what I’m really meaning is “your tax dollars.”
  • This doesn’t count how much they will pay out in damage from this year’s flood.
  • Today’s proposed cost is 360 million for the pumping station. It is a 4-year project.

The future

picture of a play button

I’m sure the EPA is also worried that one solution could create another problem. I get it. Currently, the EPA is reviewing the 10-year study. (Thank you, Corps of Engineers, for your 10-year study that will show that by solving our problem, the pumps shouldn’t create another problem…in the wetlands)

This is a new day with new people involved. What the flooding has done to the wildlife, people, and crops in this area is heart-breaking. I hope that the EPA will also see it that way and finally put in the final step of the Yazoo Backwater Project.

I’m hopeful for the future.

5 Eye-Opening Issues from the Forgotten Backwater Flood

cotton-field-forgotten-backwater-flood
A picture of one of my husband’s beautiful cotton crops from several years ago

Brief overview

550,000 acres of land is flooded in the South Mississippi Delta.

The forgotten backwater flood in the South Mississippi Delta is a catastrophe. Sometimes words become so familiar, that people gloss over them without really stopping to think about the depth and power of the words.

That is the only plausible explanation that I have for the fact that we have had very little national media attention while our area has been flooded for five months, and that the federal government hasn’t solved the problem yet, a problem they created years ago.

Hopefully, the words of the flooding just innocently haven’t sunk in yet.

Because if people were to really picture in their minds that 550,000 acres of land have been flooded for five months, then surely this issue would get the attention it deserves.

How large of an area is 550,000 acres? 550,000 acres is larger than New York City and Los Angelos combined. If those cities were flooded for five months, we would know about it.

Yazoo Backwater Project

Especially if three out of the four areas with the same federal plan to prevent flooding received the final part of the plan, and the one area that did not, happened to be one of those big cities.

In our case, we farm in the one area that did not receive the final part of the plan, and this area has been flooded for five months.

According to the MS Levee Board, over the years, the federal government has put in levees, a connecting channel, and gates as part of the Yazoo Backwater Project. However, they did not put in the pumps, which was the final step.

proposed-pump-size-yazoo-forgotten-backwater-flood
This map is from eenews.net showing the Yazoo Backwater Flood Area and the site of the proposed pumping plant. Fish and Wildlife Service

I’m sure the argument is that it doesn’t affect as many people as it would in NYC and LA since it is the South Mississippi Delta. However, it affects me and many others, and in my mind, our livelihood is as important as anyone else’s.

We need more national media attention and awareness so that the federal government will approve and start the pumps, which is a 4-year project.

Also according to the MS Levee Board, in 1986, the federal government put in some of the features of the pumping station. The dirt work is there, and my understanding is there is a culvert around the pump site.

Mississippi politicians, lawmakers, and the MS Levee Board are working tirelessly to get the pumps passed by getting word to Washington D.C. and taking some of the decision-makers on tours of the area.

5 eye-opening issues during the forgotten backwater flood

Unfortunately, during this period of the forgotten backwater flood that we are in, which has often felt topsy-turvy, there are 5 things that haven’t changed. And they are devastating. Life is still moving forward, and people must still pay their bills.

1. Land location

cotton-field-in-MS-Delta-forgotten-backwater-flood
This is what these acres normally look like when the farmers plant their crops

Land doesn’t move and can’t be moved.

My husband’s family has farmed in Holly Bluff, Mississippi since the early 1900s. He currently farms there with his brother. Although we lived in Holly Bluff for three years when we first got married, we moved from the farm to the Jackson, Mississippi area in 2001. (My husband drives an hour and fifteen minutes to the farm to work) While in Holly Bluff, we lived in the white house shown below which is right across the street from the old infamous “Lurline Screws” sign. (the sign is no longer there; the house is, but his family sold it) His family built this home in 1912.

Occupation choice

My husband and his brother are smart and well-educated. They both have college degrees and Juris Doctor degrees. I’m not saying that you have to have degrees after your name, but my point is they both could have done anything they wanted, wherever they wanted, and probably would have been successful at it.

They chose to farm as their career. They are good farmers. Some people say farming is in your blood once you have grown up around it. I tend to agree.

Meanwhile, in Washington D.C., the opponents of pumps that were already part of a plan that had been devised in 1941, and given to the other three areas many years later, didn’t think about my husband and his career choice in an area that had been farmed by his family for many years.

The eye-opening issue is that 80 percent of the land that they farm has been underwater for five months and still is. And this wasn’t in the winter. This has been during the prime planting season. They also spent money in the winter to prepare their land.

yazoo-backwater-flooding-farmland-forgotten-backwater-flood
These are their silos, office, and fields underwater. Someone took this picture in   March from a drone and sent it to my husband. The flooding is worse four months later.

It would be like if your occupation was put on hold for over five months and really, for a calendar year, all because of where it is located. And imagine its being avoidable except that the federal government neglected to put in the final step for the flood project in your area but followed through in three other areas. You would probably feel forgotten, too.

2. Bank loans

There have been years when farmers were able to farm without having to borrow money from the bank. Those were ideal years. But, most years, farmers have to borrow money from the bank to buy seed, chemicals, and pay their notes on equipment and land rent. Then, when the money from selling crops at the end of the year comes in, they pay the bank back, pay their taxes, keep some in the farm account, and decide what to pay themselves as their salary.

This year, before the land flooded, most farmers still borrowed the money upfront to prepare their land for this year’s crop…the crop that wasn’t. Also, of course they had been watching the potential flood situation with help from the MS Levee Board but were in a catch-22 as to whether to prepare the land or not.

In farming, they have a small window of opportunity to get the land prepared and plant the crops. If they had not prepared the land and it had not flooded, they would have missed their window of opportunity to plant because the land wouldn’t have been ready. So, they spent the money and time to prepare the land, it flooded, and all of the money and time was for nothing. Complicated!

3. Equipment bills

Farmers either finance their tractors and other equipment if they buy them, or they lease them like you would a car. Either way, unless they pay cash, they owe money for the equipment. These are very expensive vehicles. So, picture all cars that you own sitting in your driveway for basically a year, but you continue to write checks for them every month.

This was eye-opening for me.

4. Land rent

Some farmers farm land that they own. Other farmers lease the land from either family members or others. My husband leases 100 percent of the land from 7 different landlords. The landlords expect their money every year no matter what, as they should.

Some farmers do crop share leases which means on really good years, they pay their landlords more, and on bad years, they pay their landlords less.

My husband has done both types of leases over the years.

Currently, they have straight leases where they pay the same amount of rent whether there is a bumper crop or whether they can only plant 20 percent of their land like this year.

5. Family budget

I’ve been married for over 20 years. We may not have done the budgeting right or may be the only people who budget like this, but over the years, you begin to have expenses that occur every year or every month.

And sometimes you add things to your budget based on your “good years.”

For example, when we moved from the farm to the Jackson Metro area in 2001, we eventually decided to put our three children in private schools. We also have a mortgage. Having a child in college and another one in college in a year is expensive as well. Also, our teenagers have cars. We have to eat, buy clothes and enjoy life, too.

Sure, the best answer is to live so far beneath your means, that you can handle the “bad years.” We have had our fair share of “bad years” but nothing like the potential of this year.

Thankfully, I am a realtor and have been able to help support us over the years. But, our expenses have also increased. And all of this very real current stress was caused because there was no follow-through by the government with providing the very last piece of the puzzle–the pumps.

This one was the scariest eye-opener for me personally.

Ripple effects

Roads closed for long periods=more gas money put into the local people’s family budget

There are only three ways into the town of Holly Bluff. All three ways meet at a three-way stop at the hub of the town right in front of the house that we lived in. Two of these three ways were closed at some point during this event.

In fact, these two of three ways into the town are still closed after five months. Seriously!

***Update: The highway to Satartia which connected Holly Bluff to Hwy 49 to Jackson is now open***

***Update: The highway to Rolling Fork is now open. I drove through there recently. The water is gone is many areas, but the land looks like a desolate wasteland. Barre, depressing. I rode through in August. It felt like November or January. There should be beautful fields of crops every where. Instead, there are no crops for miles.**

The closest true grocery store to Holly Bluff is 15 minutes away in Rolling Fork, Mississippi. The road to Rolling Fork is still closed, so the residents are forced to go to Yazoo City, which is 25-30 minutes away, to get groceries. That’s double the gas money every time you need to go to the grocery store. This is probably also hurting the Rolling Fork economy since the Holly Bluff residents can’t get there.

Also, the road to Satartia, which eventually gets you to Highway 49, which is the quickest way to Jackson, is still closed as well. That is crazy! My husband has had to go a different route to work, for months. His hour and fifteen-minute one-way commute has turned into an hour an a half one-way.

So, this may be a stretch in my thinking, but wherever you live, imagine if 67 percent of the roads that led into your town were closed for five months and still aren’t open…and all due to a lack of follow-through while three other areas were served, as promised.

Other people’s family budgets and obligations

Others also have family budgets to meet, who actually live in that area. They have to worry about water in getting into their houses. Some have water in their houses, and some don’t. Just awful.

I also think about my husband’s employees. We are paying them instead of having them collect unemployment, but I can tell you, they usually depend on the long hours in the spring and fall of a year to help make their ends meet, and the hours just aren’t there. My husband pays them more hours than they work, but it doesn’t equal what they get on a normal year. This is awful!

Think about the farm equipment store employees. No one is buying equipment this year, and no one is using their mechanics this year when things break down. All of those employees also have family budgets and obligations.

Also, the seed and chemical companies aren’t selling as much this year. Their employees also have family budgets to meet.

Additionally, this affects the banks because obviously, the farmers aren’t borrowing as much as money usual because there is way less seed or chemicals to buy.

Sadly, one of the only places for my husband to get lunch in the town, Junae’s Grocery, closed down because the farmers haven’t been working much. She depends on the farmers in the area. I’m sure she also has a family budget and obligations.

The answer?

Some people may be wondering, “How are farmers going to make their payments to creditors and draw a salary to meet the family budget?” I worry about that for sure.

Most farmers have crop insurance. The problem is, the payout could be as low as 30 cents on the dollar. Crop insurance, like any other insurance, isn’t free. They pay for crop insurance in order to get paid back potentially 30 cents on the dollar (or more). The federal government also subsidizes crop insurance.

In addition to crop insurance, farmers are depending on the federal government for some disaster relief. The problem is who knows when the government will pay it out or how much farmers will get. The government isn’t known for being swift. Meanwhile, we still have to pay our bills.

This is a very serious situation that could have been avoided if the federal government had followed through with the final part of their plan many years ago. (Remember they followed through with three of the four areas that received this flood control; they “forgot” Yazoo and caved to the EPA’s opposition of the pumps over and over hence the name forgotten backwater flood) We want them to approve and start this four-year pump project asap.

It’s the right thing to do.

9 Easy Ways To Become A Runner

You want to become a runner?

There are 9 easy ways to become a runner even if you would rather be sitting on the couch on your laptop.

People start running for many reasons. For each person, the reasons are personal. Over ten years ago, I remember being intrigued by the running phenomenon. So, on a whim, I decided to hit the pavement basically just out of curiosity. Interestingly, I do not consider myself the kind of runner who “just likes to run” but can name five people off the top of my head who I consider to be runners who “just like to run.” I am the kind of runner that I call a “goal-oriented” runner.

Whichever type of runner you become, one perk of running that you will get eventually is the “runner’s high”. This is a real thing caused from endorphins and one reason people become addicted to running.

The “just likes to run” runners

The “just likes to run” runners are the people who have been running for years as their primary form of exercise and have never really taken breaks. To not run (for them) is like not brushing their teeth or something.

Oddly, the people I know who are in this category rarely run races. They run for their sanity, health, and physique. Consequently, they stick with it and are motivated just because it’s part of who they are.

The “goal-oriented” runners

In contrast, the “goal-oriented” runners are the people who run in spurts over the years. They only run when they feel the need to shed a few pounds or get the itch to run a race. And usually they will sign up for a race even if the motivation is just to shed a few pounds since they know they won’t run otherwise, and then in turn won’t shed a few pounds.

Unfortunately, they lose motivation easily if there is not a race to train for. Also, these are the people who don’t feel like “runners”. For example, if you asked me in the past, “Don’t you run a lot?” In my mind, it’s a complex answer. The short answer is, “Yes, some.” Or, “I used to.”

But if I answered you with what was really in my mind, I would say, “Well, there isn’t a race I’m interested in doing, so I’m not running these days.” Even in my prime running era, I did not feel like a “runner” because of what was driving me to run although to the outside world who saw me on the pavement all of the time, I was a “runner”. Everyone thought of me as a “runner”. Complicated!

Which type of runner is better?

My opinion is that the “just likes to run” runners will be runners for a lifetime. The other ones, like me, will start and stop many times in their lives.

I wish I were a “just likes to run” runner, but since I’m not, I can relate to those people who think they can never become a runner. This article is for people starting from scratch and needing motivation to become a “runner!”

So, here are 9 easy ways to become a runner.

1. Get in a mind set to become a runner

Begin thinking of yourself as a runner. Figure out what your motivation is for running and just do it. No more procrastination, no more excuses. Yes, think of yourself as a runner before you ever even hit the pavement.

2. Subscribe to Runner’s World Magazine

Subscribing to Runner’s World magazine is a good idea. It comes in the mail every month just for you. Not only do I recommend subscribing to this magazine but also reading about running online. Definitely do both!

As I said, you can also go online and read lots of articles, and you should. Active.com has tons of information on running. This is a good way to learn the running lingo, read other people’s successes and failures, and feel like a part of the running group.

3. Invest in some gear

First, I suggest starting with a good pair of running shoes. It is imperative to have the right shoes for your feet. This is the most important item, and you will know very quickly if your shoes aren’t a good match for you. The best way to purchase running shoes is to go in person to your local running store like Fleet Feet, Stinky Feet, or whatever store in your area. The people who work there are usually runners themselves and are there to help. They will have you walk in front of them and maybe put you on a treadmill to analyze your feet.

The next item was not around when I first started running. I would have loved to have this early on! Either the FitBit Versa Watch or the Apple Watch Series 3 are must-haves. Each watch can track your calories burned, mileage, store music, and keep up with your heart rate. You can also program a workout if that day is supposed to be an interval or tempo day. You can also read your texts and it has GPS. If you don’t mind running with your phone, this option is a lot cheaper and still tracks heart rate and calories, Fit Bit Alta HR and is on sale for Amazon Prime days July 15-16.  Having one of these watches is a fun way to see how you are progressing.

4. Get a running plan for a 5k race

Even if you don’t have an immediate plan to run a race, getting a running plan is a great way to just get started with running. On active.com, there are free running plans.

If you sign up for a race and pay the fee, you are more likely to stay on the pavement.

Unfamiliar terms on the training plan: interval, fartlek, tempo

You may see some words on the running plans you aren’t familiar with: interval, fartlek, and tempo. One example of interval training is running for 2 minutes and walking for 1 minute. Next, the word fartlek is a Swiss term that means “speed play.” It is similar to interval training but there are no set terms before you start your run. While you are running, you might tell yourself, “I’m going to sprint to that tree then jog to that stop sign.” Or, “I’m going to jog to the stop sign and walk to the next driveway.” You make it up as you go. Lastly, tempo running is where you run faster than usual for shorter periods of time or distances. As I said, you can program these workouts in your FitBit Versa Watch or Apple Series 3 Watch. The Fitbit Alta HR is the less expensive option and can do the basics.

Each of these is designed to make you a faster runner and burn lactic acid more efficiently, so you can run longer without feeling like you are dying.

5. Post-run nutrition

This is perhaps where most people, even seasoned runners drop the ball. Most people don’t understand that refueling is very important. In fact, it is essential! Eating properly after a run is also a good way to build muscle. How do you eat properly after a run? A post-run smoothie or shake is easy and beneficial. To make my post-run shakes, I use a Magic Bullet by NutriBullet.

6. Cross training

Once you start your running plan, It is good to mix it up. Cross training means doing a form of exercise besides running. If you run two to three days a week, on another day, do an exercise video on youtube, lift weights, play tennis, or walk.

7. Rest day

Definitely give yourself a rest day, two, or three. If you are going from no exercise at all to begin your regiment, then exercising three days a week is plenty. To see good results, I recommend exercising four or five days a week, especially if you are already exercising when you start running.

During a training season for races, most plans will have you running five days a week, cross training one day, and resting one day.

8. Get a running partner

Honestly, I have not found that getting a running partner is imperative. But I’m in the minority. For most people, having an accountability partner helps a lot. You will just have to see how it goes for you.

Also, there are running groups at the stores like Fleet Feet and Stinky Feet that run together. It will take you a while to see what works best for you.

9. Set little goals each time you hit the pavement

Lastly, it is important to set little goals for yourself each time you run while you are starting out. These goals are easy if you have the FitBit Versa watch, FitBit Alta HR or the Apple Series 3 watch. Some examples could be: running for one more minute longer than the last time before letting yourself walk, running a little faster the next run (you can note your heart rate and run at a little higher heart rate the next time), or trying to run farther than you did the time before in the same time frame, etc.

In closing, don’t look too far ahead with your goals. Stay in the moment. Just put one foot in front of the other. If you want to become a runner, implement these 9 easy ways.

If you do start running or have already been running for at least two years and REALLY want to challenge yourself, you can read my article about running a marathon.
